VISIT CARRATHOOL

Originally positioned on the river for the paddle steamers, then moved to the railhead where it is today...... but now there's no rail either. The railhead's been closed for about 20 years now - another thing that little towns have lost. Going back through the records and from what we've been told - at one stage, there was 2,200 people in Carrathool, with two hotels. Now the sign says 99 on the sign but I think we're down below 75 in the town itself. If you go right through, out west, the drought has affected little towns like this. If the big farmers don't employ employees or contractors it is no good to the town.

CARRATHOOL BRIDGE

The original single lane bridge, completed in 1922 over the Murrumbidgee river, is still the only crossing in the area. Of technical and historical significance, it is an Allan type timber truss road bridge, and has a rare Bascule type lift span that allowed river craft to pass.
This bridge has much to reveal about late 19th century civil engineering and manufacturing technology.
